Welcome Fellow Horse Lovers!
Meadow Haven is A Non Profit Corporation and
Member of the Bandera and Kerr County Chamber of Commerces,
and The Humane Society of the United States
Meadow Haven is dedicated to providing shelter, rehabilitation and a permanent loving home to unwanted,
abused, old, or injured horses and donkeys.
Our mission is to rehabilitate horses and place them in permanent loving homes. Some
horses are used in our horsemanship program, some become retired companions, trail horses, or are retrained for
new careers. Horses are never sent to auction or slaughter just because they have lost thier "usefulness". (All homes are thoroughly checked. There is a probation period and references are required. Please fill out an application
form if you wish to adopt. applictions and a list of horses available can be found by clicking the index to the left).
If your considering donating a horse, we will give you a tax receipt. (We do not appraise
the value). Please check with your accountant to discuss your tax bracket and maximum write off. To
be able to do this is often better than selling them at auction for a few hundred dollars.
Please see the side bar for requirements to
donate a horse.
How you can help:
We are always needing donations! If you would like to
help, please make a donation towards our feed/vet/shoer. We also accept horse products (returns and broken). We

Although
the 2 Texas slaughter Plants Finally closed in 2007 as well as the Illinois Plant, there is talk of reopening. Presently all
horses are sent to Canada and Mexico for processing. The meat is sent to Europe and is consumed at fine restaurants. Slaughtering horses
for human consumption is illegal. So why isn't it stopped? Its a big money maker for the many people who are involved in buying,
shipping, killing and sending the meat over seas. In fact, over 100,000 horses were killed for consumption last
year. Some where healthy, some were old, some were wild, some were injured. Some died before they got to the slaughter
houses because they were trampled to death in the over packed trailers.
The horses have worse fait now- they go to Mexico where
there is no regualtions. after being transported in open top trailers and left in the sun to dehydrate, they are stabbed in
the back to paralyze them and then hoisted up, still alive, to be gutted. The only way to stop this is to have a law that
prevents TRANSPORT to slaughter facilities...as we cannot control what happens in Mexico. In 2007 the plant in Mexico killed
40 times the amount they usually kill, it is reported. So slaughter has not stopped, or slowed, just been moved out of our
back yards.

Slaughter is the worst kind
of abuse-
Its hard to believe a civilized society would
allow it.
If you have ever been to a slaughter house, you would know why.
I once visited one. I saw horses- young and old- herded into an area where they are flipped
upside down, shocked and gutted. Many were struggling to get back on their feet, panicking and hurting themselves, with the
shock only stunning them briefly, while the machine began to slit thier throats and gut them (there is a link to pictures
at the slaughter house below). So, you wonder, if its so inhumane why does it continue? The answer is because of the
huge sums of money involved with the exportation of the meat. You do the math...100,000 head at approximately .42 a pound,
x 1100 lbs of horse (this goes to the seller of the animal), and then the meat being sold at an average of $40 or more a
steak overseas...
Shipping your horse to auction (where he has a 70+% chance
he will end up at slaughter) is the easy way out. After all, what do you do with an old, crippled horse, that is no longer
servicable? Some people will humanely put them down. Some will drug them and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. Some will shoot
them. Some will send them to a retirement home, where they can live out thier final days in peace, grazing and socializing
with the other horses, getting groomed and loved by a compasionate, caring person who overlooks the fact that the animal is
not, by most peoples standards, "still useful".Then theres the many sound horses who pass through as well...YES SOUND RIDING
HORSES. People dont want to deal with selling them and send them to auction. Then theres the babies- YES WEANLINGS AND YEARLINGS-
who go when the owners have over bred and need to dispose of the access in the fall so they dont have to feed them all winter.
ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY.
Thats Where We Come In...
We believe animals are not just here to serve our purpose of using them. They can be enjoyed for their beauty, nobility, and character.
There is an esthetic quality to all of God's creations, which many overlook. Once they have served their "purpose" and can't
be ridden any longer, should they be kicked to the curb? Is this what the pony who taught your child how to ride deserves?
The animal who, after having his stomach kicked, with a piece of metal in his mouth and cinch to tight, who
never complained, and carried his rider many many miles- is this what he deserves? Babies bring very little and
sound riding horses can be placed through us easily. We can supply a tax reciept for the horse's donation and one does not
have to get coggins papers and worry about shipping the animal.

| Rescued June 1 2003, But Lost Her Battle to Paralysis, Cushings Disease & Pnemonia Nov. 13 2003 |
Weezy was a precious, loving little pony, who should have been treated
with medication and surgery sooner for her problems, to extend her life. We lost her due to complications in her immune
system. Our goal is to find adoptive homes for healthy horses who can be rehabed, and for others who are old or sick, keep
them as comfortable as possible for the remainder of their lifes. We only euthanize at the veterinarians decision. BUT-We
can only provide care for the horses with your help. We are not government funded, nor do we receive grants. Please
be generous and click the Donation Button above, or send a payment by mail if can help! Any size donation is very
much appreciated,
